The public is invited to tour the new Brownell Emergency Center at UnityPoint Health® – Grinnell Regional Medical Center. An open house will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 7 p.m. Tours, demonstrations by emergency department staff, giveaways and refreshments will be provided.
To kick-off the event, a Teddy Bear Clinic will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Children may bring in a teddy bear or stuffed animal of their choice to get checked out by emergency room staff. The first 50 children to visit will receive a free teddy bear. At 5 p.m., Ron Collins, Jr., MD, and GRMC will be recognized with an award from the Iowa Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for GRMC’s extraordinary support of its employees in the Guard and Reserve. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. to recognize donors who made this new emergency department possible.
Throughout the entire event, attendees are encouraged to tour the new space, check out the ambulance and view the helicopter on the landing pad, available 2 to 3 and 5 to 6 p.m. Emergency department staff will give demonstrations of robotic stroke assessment, pediatric care, heart attack assessments and information on medication management.
This GRMC emergency department renovation expands the capability to care for patients with a new triage room, four private patient rooms and two trauma bays with sliding partition walls and doors to increase spaces for equipment during traumas. The space also features an innovative central nurses’ station and nurse call system that provides staff with more efficient supervision of patients. New monitoring and vitals equipment in each room will allow staff to more closely observe and receive constant feedback while giving patients privacy.
This renovation is the last major project from the medical center’s 20-year capital improvements plan. The facility is named in honor of the Brownell family through their contribution of more than $250,000 toward the emergency department.
