Angel Tree Adorns Hospital Lobby

Honor a loved one this holiday season with a glimmering angel ornament. The Grinnell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will sell large angel ornaments for the holidays. An “Angel Tree” will be located in the waiting area of the medical center, across from The Glass Gift Box. Angel ornaments in honor of loved ones or in memory of loved ones will cover the tree on display in the hospital until Dec. 18.

This year’s angel is a six-inch shiny metal ornament that glimmers in the light. Ornaments come in red, green, and gold. Each ornament will have a tag to honor or remember a loved one.  These are placed on a Christmas tree in the medical center after Thanksgiving. The angels may be picked up by the person who purchased it anytime after Dec. 18 and taken home or given to the honoree. The tree will remain on display until after Dec. 25.

Funds raised will be divided between the new infant security system and the auxiliary scholarship fund that supports individuals pursuing a healthcare degree. Each year the auxiliary provides $10,000 in scholarships to area residents entering or continuing a healthcare education.

To purchase an angel and support the scholarship program or infant security system, stop by the GRMC Auxiliary’s gift shop, The Glass Gift Box. Ornaments will be sold from Nov. 2 through Dec. 18. Angels are $10. For more information, contact the GRMC volunteer coordinator at 641-236-2588.

Grinnell Regional Medical Center Receives $20,000 Grant from Monsanto Fund

Grinnell Regional Medical Center announced that it has received $20,000 from the Monsanto Fund, a private foundation and the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, to assist in the development of Grinnell Regional Outpatient Physical Rehabilitation at Postels Community Health Park.

“We are very pleased to team up with the Monsanto Fund to address the needs of our community,” says Todd C. Linden, GRMC president and CEO. “The Monsanto Company has always been a great friend of the medical center. This project is in response to the growing demand for physical therapy services.”

“Our area population continues to age and the need for these services is increasing. Area residents will see many benefits of Grinnell Regional Outpatient Physical Rehabilitation including lower out-of-pocket expenses and greater access because these services are not located within the hospital itself,” says Linden.

“GRMC is a great community partner for Monsanto Company. They have been there for us as a company and for our employees who live in the area.  We know this project will be a benefit for all,” says Al Henderson, plant manager, Grinnell Monsanto Company.

About Monsanto Fund:

The Monsanto Fund is the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company. Incorporated in 1964, the Fund’s primary objective is to improve the lives of people by bridging the gap between their needs and their resources. The Monsanto Fund is focused on grant-making in four main areas: nutritional well-being through agriculture; science education, primarily on professional development for teachers; healthy environment, which includes conservation, protection of biodiversity, clean water and restoration of wildlife habitat; and improving the quality of life in communities where Monsanto employees live and work.

GRMC Announces New Pathologist

Grinnell Regional Medical Center welcomes Dale F. Andres, DO, as the new pathologist and medical director for the GRMC laboratory. He serves as the liaison between physicians and the laboratory.

Andres began serving at GRMC as an interim laboratory pathologist in 2008 and has provided regular pathology services for the medical center. His practice, Pathology Associates of Central Iowa, is based at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He or his associates come to GRMC as needed to provide rapid tissue diagnoses in support of the surgery department.

The majority of laboratory diagnostic tests for the medical center and area physicians’ office are completed in the GRMC lab. Those that can not be completed here are sent to Mercy Clinical Laboratory.

Andres provides anatomic and clinical pathology services. Clinical pathology includes the diagnosis of disease through the laboratory analysis of bodily fluids. Anatomical pathology involves the diagnosis of disease based on the microscopic evaluation of tissue specimens.

Andres earned his medical training at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Des Moines. His residency was at Letterman Army Medical Center in Presidio of San Francisco in California. He also completed an internship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He is board certified in anatomical and clinical pathology. Andres also serves on the board of trustees for Des Moines University and the board of directors for the Blood Center of Central Iowa, and is a State Commissioner for Iowa, College of American Pathologists’ Laboratory Accreditation program.

“We believe in keeping lab testing local as much as possible. Our practice’s philosophy is to provide quality and safe testing while being financially responsible,” Andres explains. “We’ve been working with Gregg Hawkins, director of the laboratory services, for several years as back up for those specialized pathology tests that can’t be completed in Grinnell. Gregg and his staff do an excellent job so our collaborative relationship with GRMC is a natural fit.”

“Dr. Andres provided a very smooth transition during his interim service at GRMC following a leave by Dr. Valarie Campbell,” says Todd Linden, president and CEO of GRMC. “The pathologist works closely with our medical staff to assure proper diagnosis of lab tests and specimens. This is a critical function in assuring local residents that they receive high quality diagnostic care. We’re very pleased Dr. Andres has decided to join the GRMC medical staff, complementing the work of our excellent providers.”
