GRMC Visitors and Patients Go Wireless

Grinnell Regional Medical Center announces wireless Internet access in the main medical center building. This technology upgrade has been in the plans for several years however cost had prohibited the progress.

“This service has been in the works for some time. Fortunately, as a result of our Mercy Health Network affiliation, the cost for the equipment was made much more affordable,” explains Heidi Thompson, information technology manager. “With the digital world we live in, many people wanted Internet access. We’re excited to offer this service to our guests in the medical center.”

GRMC has wireless access points placed throughout GRMC. Through these, GRMC patients and visitors have Internet access on a guest account while inside the medical center’s waiting rooms and patient rooms. The access is through a separate guest account so patients and guests will not have any crossover with GRMC internal servers or secure areas. Internet access carries risks and users must always be cautious when accessing websites. This web access is simply a gateway for individuals with Internet accounts to have access while visiting GRMC.
Rewards Abound in 2010 Resolution

As one set sights on the new decade, take time to assess your personal goals for satisfaction and look at how you make a difference in the community you live. Grinnell Regional Hospice welcomes area residents to experience the rewards and satisfaction of volunteering.

Hospice volunteers may work directly with patients in their home, in conjunction with other members of the hospice team and under the supervision of the volunteer coordinator. Volunteers may visit in the patient’s home, nursing home, or make hospital visits. The Grinnell Regional Hospice program also welcomes volunteers who work with staff in the office.

Volunteers are not merely a desirable supplement to professional staff; they are a crucial part of the hospice concept.  A fundamental goal of the hospice philosophy is to preserve the tie between the patient and the community, so that the patient and family are not further isolated during the last phases of illness.

One thing all hospice volunteers have in common is a desire to help others. Volunteers undergo training in preparation for serving as hospice volunteers. A new volunteer training session will be held in early 2010.

For information on volunteering with hospice call Debby Cooper, Grinnell Regional Hospice volunteer coordinator, at 641-236-2063 or email her at dcooper@grmc.us.  Make the New Year a rewarding one by becoming a Grinnell Regional Hospice volunteer.
