5 Million Lives Campaign
GRMC participated in the 5 Million Lives Campaign, which evolved from the extraordinarily successful 100K lives campaign in 2004. An estimated 122,342 preventable deaths were averted in US hospitals due to the efforts of the 3,103 hospitals that participated nationally on that groundbreaking initiative.
Now the goal for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement is to avoid 5 Million Lives due to medical errors.
When reliably implemented, these interventions will greatly reduce morbidity and mortality.
The Campaign
IHI and its partners in this campaign encourage hospitals and other healthcare providers to take the following steps to reduce harm and deaths:
- GRMC’s progress in meeting the 5 Million Lives Campaign initiatives is advancing as scheduled with excellent results.
- Deploy Rapid Response Teams…at the first sign of patient decline. GRMC formally implemented the rapid response team on June 1, 2006.
- Deliver Reliable, Evidence-Based Care for Acute Myocardial Infarction…to prevent deaths from heart attack. Standing order sets have been developed for Acute MI patients that incorporate all seven measures to ensure appropriate care measures have been taken with each AMI patient admission.
- Prevent Adverse Drug Events (ADEs)…by implementing medication reconciliation. A pilot program was developed and implemented on June 1, 2006. The program’s primary goal is to reduce the percentage of unreconciled medications at admission, transfer, and discharge for enrolled patients.
- Prevent Central Line Infections…by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically founded steps called the "Central Line Bundle." GRMC officially began a protocol in May 2006.
- Prevent Surgical Site Infections…by reliably delivering the correct perioperative antibiotics at the proper time. GRMC launched surgical site infection protocols in May 2006.
- Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia…by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically founded steps including the “Ventilator Bundle.” GRMC has implemented standing orders for the ventilator bundle since 2006.
